Captain Kai and the Glowing Cape
Kai had been waiting his whole life (all seven years of it) for his cape to glow. Tonight, while brushing his teeth, it finally did. A soft golden shimmer wrapped around his shoulders and a tiny voice in his ear whispered, "Captain Kai. The city needs you."
Kai dropped his toothbrush.
He ran to the window. Down below, the streetlights were flickering like nervous fireflies. A grumpy thundercloud was scolding the rooftops. And from the playground came a small, sad sound: a little kitten stuck high in the cherry tree.
Kai zipped down the stairs, cape sparkling. He didn't have laser eyes. He didn't have super speed. But his heart was beating bravely, and that, his grandfather had once told him, was the very first superpower.
At the tree, a little boy named Sami was crying. "That's my Pickle," he sniffled. "She's never climbed so high."
Kai looked up. The branches were thin. He took a long, brave breath. "I'll talk to her," he said.
Kai climbed slowly, talking softly the whole way. "Pickle, it's okay. We're a team now." Pickle blinked her big green eyes. When Kai was close enough, he opened his arms, and Pickle stepped right into them, purring like a tiny engine.
Down on the ground, Sami hugged them both at once. The thundercloud, watching, decided it wasn't so grumpy after all and drifted away. The streetlights stopped flickering and shone steady and proud.
Kai walked home with his cape humming. He hadn't lifted a car. He hadn't stopped a meteor. He had simply listened, climbed, and cared. And that, he now knew, was exactly what real heroes do.
