Theo, the Junior Farm Helper
Before the sun even thought about waking up, Theo pulled on his boots and grabbed the little tin pail. Today was his very first day as Junior Farm Helper, and he had a list. A real, important list.
"Eggs, milk, hay, hello," he whispered, reading his own crooked handwriting.
In the henhouse, Henrietta the hen tilted her head. Theo crouched low, the way Grandma had shown him. "Good morning, friend." He slipped his hand under her warm feathers and gently took out one perfect, speckled egg. "Thank you," he whispered. Henrietta clucked, which Theo decided meant 'you're welcome.'
Next came Daisy the cow, whose eyes were as big as saucers and twice as kind. Theo brushed her side with long, slow strokes. Daisy hummed a low moo that sounded a lot like a song. Together they filled the milk pail, and not a single drop spilled.
In the barn, the sheep were waiting like a fluffy white cloud with hooves. Theo spread fresh hay and the cloud bleated happily, nibbling and bumping their soft heads against his knees. The smallest lamb, Pip, fell asleep on his boot.
Last on the list was the most important word: hello. Theo went to every animal, even the grumpy goose, and said it properly, looking each one in the eye. The goose honked back, which was practically a hug, in goose language.
When the sun finally yawned over the hills, Grandma found Theo sitting on the fence, pail beside him, lamb still on his boot. "Big morning, Junior Helper?" she smiled.
Theo nodded. "The animals taught me something," he said. "If you take care of them, they take care of you back."
