Noor and the Reef That Forgot Its Song
Noor pressed her mask to her face and slipped into the warm blue water. Down she went, past schools of silver fish that turned all at once like one shimmering curtain. The light grew softer, then bluer, then a magical deep navy sprinkled with little glowing dots.
A gentle voice bubbled beside her. "You came." It was Marisol, the old sea turtle with a shell like a map of the world. "The reef has been waiting."
Noor followed Marisol through a forest of swaying kelp. Tiny seahorses bobbed like exclamation marks. A shy octopus changed colours just to say hello: pink, purple, then a polite spotted gold.
At the heart of the reef, a great clam was closed tight. "She is sleeping deep," Marisol whispered. "Her music keeps the reef alive. Without it, the colours fade."
Noor noticed a tangle of plastic netting wrapped around the clam. Carefully, slowly, she untied each knot, the way her mother had taught her to untangle her hair on windy mornings. The clam sighed open, and a soft pearly hum poured out, and the reef woke up in a cascade of colour: corals stretching, anemones dancing, a parade of bioluminescent jellyfish lighting the water like floating lanterns.
The little fish gathered around Noor and tickled her fingers in thanks. Marisol bowed her wise old head. "You listened to the sea, little one. The sea will always remember."
Noor swam back up slowly, watching the bubbles rise like tiny silver moons. When she broke the surface, the sun felt brand new, and she carried the reef's quiet song all the way home in her heart.
